How can I support you?

Whether you work in print or in digital media I can support you in making sure that your content is at it’s very best before you send it to go live.

Who am I?

Hello, I am Anna Gow a professional proofreader who can support you through the final stages of making sure your content is the best it can be. I proofread and check final files and layouts for fiction and non-fiction authors.

What is proofreading?

Proofreading is the final check that picks up any last minute inaccuracies and inconsistencies. These may have escaped earlier rounds of editing or crept in during the type-setting process.

Who else have I supported?

I have supported authors on a range of publications including walking guides, magazines and charity pamphlets.

How can I support you?

You’ve spent days, weeks, even months working on your project. You have written and rewritten, you’ve had it edited and you’ve rewritten again. You’ve lived it, slept it and probably dreamt about it so surely all the inconsistencies have been ironed out.

When you are that close to a project it is very easy to miss some of the smaller details. It is common for errors to creep in when text is converted to a new format and there are often adjustments needed on the layout of a piece.

As an author of a piece that you have read and reread ad infinitum it is very common to see what you expect to be there rather than what is actually there.

Depending on the nature of your project you may have additional pressures as well as your publish deadline. You may be needing to update your website to introduce your new project. You will probably be looking to increase your social media presence the closer you get to publish day. Or you may have decided to email your readers and subscribers to tell them about your new work. All these pressures can prove to be distractions that make it more difficult to spot last minute errors or inconsistencies.

A second pair of eyes can help make all the difference

As a proofreader I specialise in the detail of both the text and the layout of your work. By spotting inconsistencies and errors that have not been picked up at an earlier editorial stage, or may have slipped in once the copy has been typeset, I can help give your project the final polish .

And if you are involved in digital promotion of any kind I can also review these for you as well. That way your followers aren’t distracted by errors that dilute your message and affect your online credibility.

What is proofreading?

Proofreading is the final step you should consider in the editing process of your work. It should be the final quality check that gives your work it’s final polish.

A final proofread will pick up any last minute errors that have slipped through from the earlier editorial processes or have appeared during the type-setting or artwork layout process.

Proofreading your project will also look at the consistency in usage and presentation across your work. Accuracy and consistency of text, images and layout are checked to ensure as smooth a read as possible.

Proofreading can be carried out on a variety of formats depending on your requirements.

  • Word document
  • Type-set file such as pdfs
  • Print proofs
  • Digital content such as web pages or social media graphics

Who am I?

I’m Anna Gow and I have been proofreading copy and artwork in various capacities for 25 years. An excellent eye for detail and layout means that I pick up those inconsistencies that may otherwise be left unchanged. Engaging with projects as if they were my own, I always strive to get your work as close to 100% perfect as possible.

An early role in financial marketing gave me a grounding in proofing both copy documents and typeset artwork to a high standard. This means that I am able to take on projects in a variety of formats including Word or Adobe pdf files and final print proofs. It also gave me experience in proofing and fully checking a new website for the Corporate market.

After several years running a local charity eBay shop I decided to go back to proofreading in a freelance capacity. I am now splitting my time between proofreading and training for an AMUSF Diploma in Upholstery.

Since going freelance I have worked on a number of walking books in the Cornish Walks series by Liz Hurley. I was also involved in some sections of a recent book on the sword in Anglo-Saxon England. I also provide my proofreading services, in a voluntary capacity, to the charity that I used to work for.
